Eco-Friendly Hacks for a Busy, On-the-Go Lifestyle

Living a sustainable lifestyle doesn’t mean giving up convenience—it just means being a little more intentional. In today’s blog post (and video below!), I’m sharing some of the eco-friendly habits and time-saving hacks that have truly changed my daily routine. Whether you're a student, professional, parent, or just someone always on the go, there’s something here for you!

🫖 1. Start Your Morning Sustainably

I’m a firm believer that a mindful morning starts the night before. If you love a warm cup of tea or coffee in the morning, here’s a simple switch: make it at home.

I use loose-leaf tea from Numi Organic Teamy favorite is Cape Town Chai—and I prep my tea strainer the night before. This way, I just add hot water in the morning and I’m out the door. It’s faster than the drive-thru and avoids those single-use cups (which, by the way, are rarely recyclable or compostable).

💡 Pro Tip: You can do the same with coffee! Just grind your beans in advance and set up your machine or French press at night.

🥣 2. Master Your Freezer Game

Your freezer can be a lifesaver! I freeze single-serving portions of cooked beans, lentils, and rice in upcycled jars (think salsa or almond butter jars). Just stack them in layers—beans first, rice on top—and let them thaw overnight or in your bag on the way to work.

These are perfect for quick lunches and eliminate food waste while saving money. Remember to leave space in the jar before freezing (liquid expands!), and thaw them naturally to avoid glass cracking.

🧊 3. Freeze Hummus + Other Snacks

This tip was a game-changer for me! Did you know you can freeze individual portions of hummus? I portion mine into ¼ cup containers and pop them into my bag in the morning. By lunchtime, it’s perfectly thawed and ready to eat.

You can do this with many dips, sauces, or spreads. It’s ideal for on-the-go snacking and helps you avoid last-minute packaged snacks.

🥕 4. Pre-Chop Your Veggies

Here’s another simple hack: pre-chop your veggies at the start of the week. I like to store carrots in cold water to keep them crisp longer. Bonus—this trick can revive limp veggies too!

Pair those carrots with your frozen hummus for a quick, crunchy snack that’s both healthy and zero-waste.

🍋 5. Use Ice Trays for More Than Ice

If you haven’t tried this, you're missing out: freeze small portions of broth, herbs, or lemon juice in ice cube trays! These frozen cubes are easy to throw into any dish while cooking and reduce spoilage. I especially like using broth cubes instead of oil for a healthier sauté.

🧼 6. Swap Disposable Kitchen Items

Say goodbye to parchment paper—silicone baking mats are your new best friend. They’re reusable, non-stick, and super easy to clean. They help reduce waste and make cleanup faster, too.

🏺 7. Protect Your Jars On the Go

If you carry jars like I do, invest in jar jacketssilicone sleeves that protect glass jars from breaking and help insulate hot or cold drinks. They’ve saved me from more than a few spills and broken jars in my bag!

♻️ 8. Use What You Already Have

You don’t need fancy products to be sustainable. Get creative! I often cover leftovers with a simple plate instead of cling wrap. Reuse old jars. Rethink before buying new. It’s about progress, not perfection.

🌍 Final Thoughts

Living a more eco-friendly life is all about building small habits that fit your lifestyle. Whether you’re prepping your tea the night before or freezing your favorite dip, these little shifts make a big difference for the planet—and your peace of mind.
